Some 150 at-risk youths have benefitted from scholarships valued at $27 million at Northern Caribbean University (NCU) during the past four years under an initiative dubbed RESCUE (Restoring Every Students’ Confidence Using Education).
Two of these beneficiaries were among the 518 graduates attending the virtual graduation exercise of the Mandeville-based university on August 8, 2021. In his address at the event, NCU President Dr Lincoln Edwards appealed to donors to support the RESCUE initiative as it istransforming the lives of many young people. The president also announced that the NCU Alumni Federation had provided more than scholarships to assist students to be financially cleared for graduation, or to continue their studies.
Topping the NCU Class of 2021 are Shavel Royal, who has been awarded the Bachelor of Social Work summa cum laude, and Anthony Lennon who has been conferred with the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics summa cum laude.
NCU also conferred several honorary degrees. The recipients included media and communication specialist Fae Ellington (Doctor of Liberal Arts); former Caymanian government minister Dr Linford Pierson (Doctor of Public Service); and United States-based hotelier Andrew Ingraham (Doctor of Business). Ingraham donated J$1.7 M towards scholarships at NCU.
The university presented the 2021 President’s Medallion to retired educator and alumna Pearline Dawes Higgins. Meanwhile, alumnus Dr Wilmore Webley was recognized as the 2021 product sample for NCU. Dr Webley is associate professor of microbiology and director of Pre-Med/Pre-Health Advising at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
