Northern Caribbean University (NCU) and COK Sodality Co-op Credit Union have formed a strategic partnership to generate growth in each organisation’s core business.

Speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding in Kingston on August 30, 2022, COK President Clive Medwynter said the new partnership will offer the credit union greater access to improve its member base and further achieve a major aspect of its mandate of sharing the cooperative principles and improving financial literacy to a wide cross section of Jamaicans. He signaled that the NCU community can expect a blended service experience inclusive of the new and improved COK digital service delivery which includes its upgraded online facilities and mobile app.

In expressing delight at the partnership, NCU President Professor Lincoln Edwards said it was the kind of initiative Jamaica needed at this time. He pointed to NCU’s long history of being people-centred which gave students with talents, but lacking resources, the opportunity to further their education. This was done by employing them in campus-based industries during the mornings and attending classes in the afternoon. The NCU President argued that there were still people in the society who were underserved and can benefit from the synergy between COK and NCU. He welcomed the opportunity for both institutions to join forces to lift and build communities.

Meanwhile, CEO of COK Deryke Smith, said that the partnership will provide synergies between both institutions allowing COK employees to enroll at NCU and gain access to the best quality of education offered at the university level in Jamaica. Smith noted that COK was the first credit union to offer membership to the wider public rather than employee groups. He said the financial institution was committed to promoting financial freedom for its members.

Under the MOU, NCU will collaborate with COK to provide training for its staff at preferential rates. In addition, COK will partner with NCU in the implementation of community-based programmes, as well as Corporate Social Responsibility projects. COK will also facilitate student-development opportunities including:

  • on-the-job training for students
  • internship programmes
  • student academic projects
  • provision of scholarships and grants to NCU students.
