Northern Caribbean University (NCU) has received funding from Digicel Foundation’s Build Jamaica Grant to train community members in Digital Entrepreneurship. Digicel representatives visited NCU Mandeville Campus on Thursday, November 17, 2022 to formally present the grant to the NCU team.
In welcoming the Digicel team, NCU President, Dr Lincoln Edwards, pointed out that from its origin, NCU has been the engine and emblem of a revolution to provide access to training for those who have abilities but no access. In his remarks, Dara Fitzgerald Selby, Manager, Digicel Business, described the project as “very exciting”, noting that “Digicel has a strong entrepreneurial spirit and, so, this is the perfect collaboration”.
NCU is the winner of the Build Jamaica Grant -valued at $2 Million- for the parish of Manchester. The Morris Entrepreneurship Centre, directed by Dr Hazel O’Conner, are the recipients of the grant on behalf of the university. The Build Jamaica Grant is a community development programme that seeks to partner with grassroot organisations by investing in development projects. The programme’s areas of focus are education and entrepreneurship; both of which NCU fall within.
The Morris Entrepreneurship Centre hopes to teach up and coming entrepreneurs within the communities of Manchester about Digital Entrepreneurship and the many benefits that come with taking their business to the digital space.
Dr O’Conner stated: “This programme aims to unlock the opportunities in entrepreneurship that are offered through the digital economy. Since the pandemic, Digital Entrepreneurship has become one of the main drivers in terms of job creation, wealth and an overall reduction in unemployment”.
The target group for NCU’s Digital Entrepreneurship Community project are young people who have a passion for entrepreneurship as well as a keen interest in starting their own online business.
He thanked Dr O’Conner and her team for the work they continue to do in educating communities around Jamaica about entrepreneurship and digital entrepreneurship.
