After two years of virtual staging, Northern Caribbean University (NCU) opened its gates for its annual Open Day event. Students and facilitators from all corners of the island journeyed to the main campus in Mandeville on November 21, 2022, for a taste of the beacon on the hill.

Representatives from over 70 schools were in attendance. Beaming with excitement and anticipation for the day’s activities, the students filed into the gymnatorium, where they were greeted warmly by faculty.  The energy in the room was ably channeled by co-hosts  Trishagaye Kelly and Truston Grizzle, students of the Department of Communication Studies, who engaged with the attendees and kept the momentum throughout the day.

Kelly and Grizzle conversed with Prof. Edward Lincoln, President of NCU, who took the opportunity to highlight some of the accomplishments of the university, such as the institution’s winning performance in the national and international Business Model Competitions and other international contests. In the process, NCU defeated prominent global institutions like Harvard and John Hopkins universities.

Throughout the day important nuggets about enrollment and life on the hill were shared with the high schoolers.  The gymnatorium, decked with departmental booths, displayed their projects, programmes and possibilities for the aspirational visitors. Students flocked the displays to interact with the presentations, enquire about the offerings and engage in fun activities and treats.

Led by faithful recruitment and S.T.E.P representatives, students were exposed to the various key points on campus during the campus tours. The dorms, Sorenson Hall, Circle of Knowledge, and the infamous Steps to Christ were among the fun and interesting stops made.

The event was capped with a photo scavenger hunt, requiring high schoolers and their chaperones to rely on the recollection of information from the campus tour, their creativity and team spirit. Several schools participated in the hunt with representatives from Annotto Bay High, Dinthill High, Clarendon College, and Oberlin High being declared the winners of the hunt.

The Recruitment and Admissions team, along with the faculty members, felt fulfilled by the turnout. Carlene Barrett, Director of Recruitment and Admissions, commended the team for their dedication to executing a successful event and looks forward to the upcoming school semester. “The team worked assiduously in preparation for this event, and we are encouraged by the turnout. We will continue to build positive relationships in our schools and churches. We want our presence to be felt, the value of our product to be known, and NCU to be the University of choice,” said Barrett.

She disclosed that in January 2023, there will be an online segment of Open Day which will cater to the international prospective students, as well as those who missed the face-to-face session. It promises to be equally engaging and informative.
