University President, Dr Lincoln P. Edwards, and Interim Vice President for Student Services, Mrs Carolyn Smith received 25 ChromeBook devices from Mr St Aubyn Edwards, director of the Jamaican company, AgroPure, on June 1, 2022, at the Mandeville Campus of Northern Caribbean University.

The devices were secured as a donation through the collaborative efforts of St Aubyn Edwards and Mark Hekimian, chief executive officer of Done Deal IT Solutions, an information technology company in Texas, USA.

The Chromebooks are computer devices with operating systems that are based in Google built-in applications, cloud storage and stronger security features. Chromebooks look like laptops but have operating systems that are web-based while laptops are mostly based on Windows operating systems that are usually downloaded or bought and then installed.

In receiving the chromebooks, Dr Edwards expressed gratitude for their provision at this time and mentioned that he was looking forward to partnerships between Mr St Abuyn Edwards’ company, AgroPure, and the university. The president described Mr St Aubyn Edwards as a friend of the university. He has an Adventist background and has family members and friends who are alumni of NCU.

Mrs Smith expressed her delight in receiving the devices in light of the challenges being experienced by some students with online learning and the lack of adequate equipment for some faculty members for course instruction. The donated devices will be distributed to faculty members and students who were most in need of devices for their course work.

Mr St Aubyn Edwards said he is impressed by NCU’s impact on its alumni and on society as a whole. He is also inspired by the determination of the university to achieve its mission despite its challenges. On this trip to Jamaica, he included Northern Caribbean University on the list of schools to receive computer device donations, made possible through Done Deal IT Solutions. Other schools on the list include primary level schools across Jamaica.

Along with other partners, Mr Edwards started the agricultural company AgroPure in St. Mary four years ago. As the company grows, he hopes to establish a subsidiary company that will work with overseas partner organisations to supply educational institutions, at a reduced cost, devices applicable to our current digital educational, work and business environments. He hopes to initiate more beneficial partnerships with NCU over time.
